# Free CSV Diff Tool

Category: Developer

## What is a CSV diff tool?

A CSV diff tool compares two versions of tabular data and shows which records were added, removed, changed, or left alone. This browser tool matches rows by a shared key such as an ID, SKU, or email, then highlights exact field changes without uploading either file.

A plain text diff treats a reordered export as a wall of changes. This comparator parses each CSV first and joins rows by the key you select, so moving a record from line 20 to line 200 does not create a false difference.

Quoted commas, embedded line breaks, doubled quotes, UTF-8 byte-order marks, and comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe separators are handled locally. You can filter the result by status and copy or download a field-level audit report.

## How to use it

1. **Add both sources** - Paste CSV data, choose local files, or load the worked example for the original and updated versions.
2. **Prepare the comparison** - Confirm each delimiter, then let the tool parse the headers and find shared columns.
3. **Choose a unique key** - Select the ID, SKU, email, or other column that uniquely identifies a record in both files.
4. **Review the diff** - Compare the added, removed, changed, and unchanged counts, then filter the cell-level table.
5. **Export the audit** - Copy or download a CSV report with one row for each field that changed.

## Who it's for

- **Operations teams** comparing yesterday's order export with today's to spot new, missing, or edited records.
- **Developers** checking data migrations and fixture updates by stable database ID rather than source line number.
- **Finance teams** reconciling vendor lists, price catalogs, and transaction exports before approval.
- **Analysts** auditing CRM or survey snapshots while keeping confidential rows on their device.

## Expert note

The safest comparison key is stable and unique in both files. A name or row number can change; an immutable ID usually cannot. Duplicate key values are rejected because silently pairing them would make the diff ambiguous.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are my CSV files uploaded?

No. Both files are read, parsed, compared, filtered, and exported inside your browser. Their rows are not sent to a conversion service or stored by CanDoYa. This local workflow is suitable for confidential exports, although you should still follow your organization's data-handling rules.

### Is the CSV diff tool free?

Yes. You can compare two CSV files, choose a key column, inspect every result status, and copy or download the difference report without payment or sign-up. The file, row, and column limits exist only to keep the browser tab responsive.

### How large a CSV can I compare?

Each file can be up to 5 MB and contain up to 100,000 data rows and 500 header columns. The tool reports a clear error when a source exceeds a limit instead of silently truncating it. Split larger exports before comparing them.

### How does the tool match rows in two CSV files?

You select a column that exists in both files, such as ID, SKU, or email. The tool pairs rows with exactly equal values in that column, regardless of row order. Values are case-sensitive and spaces are significant, so clean inconsistent keys before comparing.

### What happens when a key is duplicated?

The comparison stops and asks you to choose a unique key or remove duplicates. Picking one duplicate arbitrarily could hide a changed row or match the wrong records. Use the CSV Deduplicator first if a supposedly unique ID appears more than once.

### Can it compare CSV files with different column orders?

Yes. Columns are matched by their header names, not positions. A shared field can move from one position to another without creating a change. Columns found in only one file are included in the result, where their missing-side values appear blank.

### Does it support quoted commas and TSV files?

Yes. The parser handles delimiters inside quoted cells, doubled quote characters, embedded line breaks, common line endings, and a UTF-8 byte-order mark. You can auto-detect or choose comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe input independently for each file.

### Why is key-based CSV comparison better than a text diff?

A text diff compares lines, so sorting the same rows differently can make an unchanged file look completely rewritten. Key-based comparison treats each row as a record. It isolates actual inserts, removals, and field edits even when export order changes.
