# Free Profit Margin Calculator

Category: Calculators

## What does a profit margin calculator do?

A profit margin calculator shows how much profit remains after cost, then expresses it as a percentage of revenue. Enter cost and selling price to see profit, margin and markup, or work backward from a target margin to find the price or maximum cost you need.

Use the calculator for product pricing, quotes, invoices or quick business checks. The math is currency-neutral: type any currency amount and read the cost, revenue and profit in that same currency. Everything runs in your browser, so your pricing data is not uploaded.

## How to use it

1. **Choose the calculation** - Pick cost and revenue, price from margin, price from markup, or max cost from margin.
2. **Enter the known values** - Type the cost, revenue, target margin or markup needed for that mode.
3. **Read the result** - Profit, revenue, margin and markup update instantly as you type.
4. **Copy the summary** - Copy the pricing result to a note, quote or spreadsheet.

## Who it's for

- **Small businesses** checking whether a product price leaves enough gross margin.
- **Freelancers** turning project costs into a target quote with room for profit.
- **Retail teams** comparing margin and markup before publishing a price.
- **Marketplace sellers** testing cost changes, fees and expected revenue.
- **Finance reviews** explaining why a 30% margin is not the same as a 30% markup.

## Expert note

Profit margin divides profit by revenue, while markup divides profit by cost. A product that costs 70 and sells for 100 has a 30% margin but a 42.86% markup.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you calculate profit margin?

Profit margin is profit divided by revenue, multiplied by 100. Profit is revenue minus cost. If something costs 70 and sells for 100, profit is 30 and the profit margin is 30%.

### What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin uses selling price or revenue as the base. Markup uses cost as the base. The same 30 profit on 70 cost and 100 revenue is a 30% margin, but a 42.86% markup.

### Can this calculate selling price from a target margin?

Yes. Choose Price from margin, enter your cost and target margin, and the calculator divides cost by 1 minus the margin rate. A cost of 70 with a 30% target margin needs a 100 selling price.

### Can I calculate max cost from a target margin?

Yes. Choose Max cost from margin, enter the selling price and target margin, and the tool shows the highest cost that still meets that margin. It is useful when supplier prices or fees change.

### Does this include tax, shipping or marketplace fees?

Only if you include them in the cost field. For gross margin, enter the direct cost of the product or sale. If fees matter to your decision, add them to cost before calculating.

### Is this profit margin calculator free and private?

Yes. It is free, works without an account, and runs entirely in your browser. The costs, prices and margins you enter are not uploaded or stored on a server.
