# Vesting Schedule Calculator

Category: Calculators

## What is a vesting schedule calculator?

A vesting schedule calculator turns an equity grant into a dated timeline: it takes your total shares, start date, cliff and vesting period, then shows how many units vest on each date, how much has vested so far, and when you are fully vested. Everything runs in your browser.

Enter a grant once and the tool builds the whole schedule: the cliff release, every monthly or quarterly tranche after it, and a running cumulative total that lands exactly on your grant size. It highlights everything vested as of today, tells you your next vesting date, and lets you copy the table as CSV. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

## How to use it

1. **Enter your grant** - Type the total number of shares or units and the vesting start date from your grant letter.
2. **Set the term and cliff** - Enter the vesting period in years and the cliff in months (the classic default is 4 years with a 12-month cliff), then pick monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual vesting.
3. **Read the schedule** - See units vested to date, your next vesting date, the fully-vested date, and the full period-by-period table. Copy it as a summary or CSV.

## Who it's for

- **Employees with RSUs or options** checking how many shares have vested and what is coming next.
- **Job candidates** comparing offers by modelling different cliffs, terms and grant sizes.
- **Founders and startup operators** laying out a co-founder or early-hire vesting timeline.
- **Finance and HR teams** sanity-checking a grant's schedule against the plan documents.

## Expert note

The cliff does not delay your grant, it front-loads it: at a 1-year cliff on a 4-year monthly grant, a full 25% vests in a single lump on the cliff date, then the remaining 75% vests monthly, so leaving even one day before the cliff means you keep nothing.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the vesting schedule calculator free?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Your grant size, dates and terms are never uploaded or stored on a server.

### What is a cliff in vesting?

A cliff is an initial period during which nothing vests. On the cliff date the whole amount accrued up to that point vests at once. A common example is a 1-year cliff on a 4-year grant: 25% vests on your first work anniversary, then the rest vests gradually. Leave before the cliff and you forfeit the entire grant.

### How does standard 4-year vesting with a 1-year cliff work?

Over four years your grant vests in equal monthly slices, but the first twelve months are held behind the cliff. On the 12-month mark 25% vests in one block; after that, 1/48 of the total vests every month for the remaining 36 months until you reach 100%.

### Does this work for RSUs and stock options?

Yes. The schedule is the same maths for restricted stock units, incentive or non-qualified stock options, or any grant that vests over time. Enter the number of shares or units; the calculator does not model exercise price, taxes or strike price, only when units vest.

### How are fractional shares handled?

Companies grant whole shares, so the calculator rounds each vesting event to whole units using cumulative rounding. That keeps every tranche a whole number while making the schedule add up exactly to your total grant, with any remainder placed in the final vesting date.

### Can I model a grant with no cliff?

Yes. Set the cliff to 0 months and the grant simply vests in equal amounts on each period boundary from the first month, quarter or year onward, with no initial lump sum.
