Why can ISBN-10 end with X?
ISBN-10 uses a modulo-11 check digit, so the calculated value can be 10. The standard writes that value as X, and it is only valid as the final character, never in the middle of the ISBN.
Why does an ISBN-13 need to start with 978 or 979?
ISBN-13 is part of the EAN barcode system for books. The 978 and 979 Bookland prefixes identify book numbers; a 13-digit code with another prefix may be a valid EAN, but it is not an ISBN.
Can this prove a book really exists?
No. It verifies the structure and check digit only. A valid ISBN can still be unassigned, reused incorrectly or attached to metadata that needs checking in a publisher, library or bookseller database.
