How do you calculate sales commission?

A commission calculator multiplies eligible sales by a commission rate, then adds optional base pay to show total earnings. For tiered plans, it can apply each rate only within its bracket or apply the reached rate to all sales. This calculator shows both methods and the full payout breakdown.

How to use

  1. 1Choose a commission structure. Select a flat rate or a tiered plan. For tiers, state whether rates are progressive or retroactive.
  2. 2Enter sales and base pay. Add the eligible sales amount for the payout period and any fixed base pay for that same period.
  3. 3Set the rates. Enter one flat percentage, or define each tier ceiling and rate. The final tier has no upper limit.
  4. 4Review and copy the payout. Read commission, total earnings, effective rate and the applied bracket breakdown, then copy the calculation if needed.

Who it's for

Use the flat plan for one rate across all sales, or build a tier schedule with up to six brackets. The results update live and stay entirely in your browser. Figures are pre-tax estimates; your written compensation plan controls quotas, credits, returns, caps, bonuses and payout timing.

FAQ

Is this commission calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free, has no sign-up and supports flat rates plus as many as six commission tiers. You can change the sales amount, base pay, currency display and tier method as often as you need.

Are my sales and pay figures uploaded?

No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser. The sales amounts, rates and base pay you enter are not sent to a server or saved to an account.

What is the sales commission formula?

For a flat plan, commission equals eligible sales multiplied by the commission rate. Total earnings equal base pay plus commission. A 6% rate on 80,000 in sales produces 4,800 commission; adding 3,000 base pay produces 7,800 total earnings before tax.

What is the difference between progressive and retroactive commission?

Progressive commission applies each rate only to sales inside that tier, like marginal tax brackets. Retroactive commission selects the rate reached by total sales and applies it to the entire sales amount. Retroactive plans can create a larger jump in payout when a threshold is crossed.

How is the effective commission rate calculated?

The effective rate is total commission divided by total eligible sales, multiplied by 100. In a progressive plan it is the blended rate across all reached tiers. Base pay is excluded, because it is fixed compensation rather than commission on sales.

Can I add a base salary to commission?

Yes. Enter the fixed base pay for the same period as the sales amount. The calculator adds it after calculating commission and reports total earnings separately. It does not convert annual salary to monthly or quarterly pay, so use matching periods.

Does this calculate tax, bonuses or clawbacks?

No. Results are gross, pre-tax estimates. The calculator does not apply withholding, quota bonuses, draws, splits, caps, returns, cancellations or clawbacks. Add only eligible sales and compare the result with the exact terms in your compensation agreement.
