01 / Overview

What does flattening a PDF form do?

Flattening a PDF form converts the saved appearance of its interactive fields into ordinary page content, then removes the controls. Use it to prepare a completed form for sharing or printing. This tool previews the document, lists its stored field values, and creates a flattened copy entirely in your browser.

How to use

  1. 01
    Open the completed PDF

Choose or drop one PDF. Files stay on your device. Try the sample to see text fields and a checkbox across two pages.

  2. 02
    Compare pages and saved values

Use the page arrows and expand the field list. Check that the displayed answers match the values you intended to submit.

  3. 03
    Flatten and review

Choose Flatten form fields. Compare the original and flattened previews, then download the new PDF. Keep the original if you may need to edit it again.

Who it's for

  • Send a completed registration form without leaving answer boxes editable as form controls.
  • Prepare filled forms before combining documents that reuse the same internal field names.
  • Keep a final submission copy alongside the original editable template.

Open a completed AcroForm, check every page, and choose Flatten form fields. The result keeps the existing page text and graphics without converting pages into images. Your original PDF remains unchanged. Comments, links, and other annotations are not flattened and may appear above flattened fields.

Need to change an answer first? Use the PDF form filler, save the completed form, and return here to inspect the final copy. Flatten before applying a digital signature; this tool refuses PDFs containing signature fields or certifications.

FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Parsing, previewing, and flattening happen locally in your browser. PDF libraries load when needed, but your document is not sent to a conversion server. Clear the tool or close the tab when you finish. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them.

Is this PDF form flattener free?

Yes. It is free and does not require an account. There is no watermark added to the output. It is intended for completed standard AcroForms; it does not create fields, fill answers, or turn scanned handwriting into text.

What are the limits?

Choose one PDF up to 50 MB, with at most 500 pages, 2,000 fields, and 10,000 field appearances. Encrypted files, XFA forms, signature fields, hidden controls, and unsupported form structures are refused. If appearances are missing, save the completed form in its PDF editor before retrying.

Does flattening make a PDF impossible to edit?

No. The answers stop being interactive form fields, but a PDF editor can still change ordinary page content. Flattening is not encryption, redaction, or tamper protection. It also does not sanitize document scripts, attachments, metadata, or other annotations. Use the appropriate separate workflow for those tasks.

Will my fonts and filled values stay the same?

The tool reuses the saved field appearance streams, so it does not substitute a new font or regenerate text from stored values. A previously stale appearance can still be stale in the result. Compare each preview with the field list, and reopen the downloaded PDF before sending it.

Can I flatten a signed PDF or undo flattening?

Use an unsigned copy before applying a digital signature. This tool refuses signature fields and certifications because rewriting a PDF can invalidate signatures. Flattening removes the interactive field structure from the downloaded copy. Keep the original editable PDF; this tool cannot reconstruct its fields afterward.
