How do you convert data storage units?

Enter a data size, choose its unit, and select the unit you need. This data storage converter calculates bits, bytes, decimal KB, MB, GB and TB, plus binary KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB at once. It clearly separates powers of 1000 from powers of 1024 so the result is unambiguous.

How to use

  1. 1Enter the data size. Type a non-negative number. Both a dot and a single comma work as the decimal mark.
  2. 2Choose the source and target units. Select bits, decimal byte units such as GB, or binary IEC units such as GiB. Use the swap button to reverse them.
  3. 3Read or copy the result. The main result updates immediately, and the tables show the same amount in every supported unit.

Who it's for

The converter uses the byte as a common base. Decimal storage units follow SI powers of 1000, so 1 GB is exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary IEC units follow powers of 1024, so 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Bits convert exactly at eight bits per byte. Results update as you type and stay on your device.

FAQ

Is this data storage converter free?

Yes. The converter is free to use with no sign-up, download or conversion limit. All calculations run locally in your browser.

Is any value I enter uploaded?

No. The conversion is simple arithmetic performed on your device. Your value is not sent to a server or stored by the tool.

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

A kilobyte (kB or KB in common usage) is 1000 bytes under the decimal SI convention. A kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes under the IEC binary convention. This converter labels them separately instead of silently treating KB as 1024 bytes.

How many bytes are in a megabyte?

One decimal megabyte (MB) is exactly 1,000,000 bytes. One binary mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. Choose MB or MiB according to the convention used by your drive, file-size limit or software.

Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?

Drive makers normally advertise 1 TB as one trillion bytes. Some operating systems divide that number by 1024 three times but label the result GB, producing about 931.323. The technically precise binary label for that displayed value is GiB.

How many bits are in one byte?

There are exactly eight bits in one byte. Unit symbols are case-sensitive: lowercase b means bit, while uppercase B means byte, so 1 MB is eight times as much data as 1 Mbit.

Can I convert decimal and binary units in the same calculation?

Yes. You can convert directly from any supported unit to any other, including GB to GiB, MiB to MB, bits to bytes and TB to TiB. The complete table updates at the same time.
