How do you simplify a ratio?
Convert all terms to whole numbers, find their greatest common divisor, then divide every term by that same divisor. The new terms keep exactly the same relationship.
Can a ratio contain decimals?
Yes. Decimal terms are converted to exact integers using a common power of ten before simplification. For example, 2.5:5 simplifies to 1:2.
How do you split a total by a ratio?
Add the ratio terms to find the total number of shares. Divide the total by that sum, then multiply by each ratio term. A total of 100 split 3:2 gives 60 and 40.
What is an equivalent ratio?
Equivalent ratios describe the same proportion. Multiplying or dividing every term by the same non-zero number creates an equivalent ratio, so 2:3, 4:6 and 10:15 are equivalent.
