What is a BPM detector?

A BPM detector estimates the tempo of a song, loop, or recording in beats per minute. Choose an audio file and the tool compares repeating energy changes to find its strongest pulse, then shows the likely BPM, confidence, beat length, and useful half-time or double-time alternatives.

Automatic tempo detection works best on music with clear, repeated attacks such as kick drums, snares, claps, or strummed chords. If a track is rubato, changes tempo, starts with ambience, or has little percussion, play it and use the built-in tap control as a practical second opinion.

Analysis uses the first three minutes of decoded audio and stays in this browser tab. There is no account, server upload, track database, or stored result.

FAQ

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The browser reads and decodes your selected file locally, then analyzes its PCM samples in the current tab. CanDoYa does not receive or store the audio, filename, detected BPM, or tap history. Closing or refreshing the page clears the temporary working data.

Is the BPM detector free?

Yes. You can analyze audio, preview it, copy the detected tempo, and use tap tempo without an account, subscription, watermark, or usage credits. Processing happens on your device, so the practical constraints are browser codec support, available memory, and the 100 MB file limit.

What audio limits and formats apply?

Files can be up to 100 MB and need at least three seconds of decodable audio. MP3 and WAV have the broadest browser support. M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC, WebM, AIFF, and other formats may work depending on the codecs included with your browser and operating system.

How accurate is an online BPM detector?

Accuracy is strongest for steady music with clear rhythmic attacks. Syncopation, long ambient intros, live timing drift, changing tempo, and sparse vocals can lower confidence or cause a half-time result. Check the suggested alternative tempos and use tap tempo when the automatic pulse does not match what you hear.

Why did it detect half or double the expected BPM?

A beat can often be counted at more than one metrical level. A hip-hop groove felt at 70 BPM may also contain eighth-note motion at 140 BPM, while a fast drum pattern can be grouped in half-time. The alternatives are not necessarily errors; choose the count that matches your project grid.

Can I detect BPM from speech or a podcast?

Usually not reliably. Natural speech does not repeat with the stable pulse that tempo detection expects. A podcast intro with rhythmic music may work, but spoken sections can produce low confidence. For speech pacing, a words-per-minute calculator is a better measurement than beats per minute.

How does tap tempo work?

Play the track and press the TAP button or T key on each beat. The tool converts the average interval between your recent taps into BPM and trims unusually early or late taps once enough samples are available. Pause for more than 2.5 seconds to begin a new reading.
