What does a pitch shifter do?

A pitch shifter transposes music, vocals, or samples higher or lower without intentionally changing their tempo. Choose an audio file, move up or down by semitones, fine-tune in cents, and export a WAV. Processing happens locally in your browser, so your recording is never uploaded.

This tool combines broad semitone changes with one-cent fine tuning. A shift of +12 semitones raises audio by one octave, -12 lowers it by one octave, and 100 cents equals one semitone. The frequency ratio follows equal temperament: 2^(total cents / 1200).

Export loads FFmpeg WebAssembly only when you create the result. It changes the effective sample rate, resamples to 44.1 kHz, and applies inverse tempo compensation. The result stays close to the source length, but it does not independently preserve vocal formants.

FAQ

Is my audio uploaded?

No. The source file, processing, preview, and result remain in your browser tab. The first export downloads the FFmpeg engine code, but your recording is not sent with that request. Refreshing or closing the tab releases the temporary local file URLs.

Is this pitch shifter free?

Yes. You can shift, preview, and download audio without an account, subscription, watermark, or usage credit. The practical limits are your device's available memory and processing speed because decoded audio and the WAV result are held locally.

What pitch and file limits apply?

Pitch ranges from one octave down to one octave up, with an extra -100 to +100 cents of fine tuning. The adaptive file cap is 100 MB on mobile or lower-memory devices, 250 MB on typical desktops, and 500 MB on high-memory desktops.

Can I change pitch without changing tempo?

Yes. The export applies inverse tempo compensation after shifting the sample rate, keeping the duration close to the source. This is different from simple tape-speed playback, where pitch and speed change together. Very complex audio can still show processing artifacts.

What is the difference between semitones and cents?

A semitone is one adjacent key on a piano in 12-tone equal temperament. One semitone contains 100 cents. Use semitones to transpose musical intervals and cents to match a slightly sharp or flat recording more precisely.

Will vocals keep their natural character?

Small changes often sound convincing, but this tool does not separately correct formants. Large upward shifts can make voices sound smaller, while large downward shifts can sound heavier. For exposed professional vocals, a dedicated studio pitch editor may produce cleaner results.
