It counts the whitespace-separated words in your text and divides by the reading rate you picked. So 1,500 words at 238 wpm is about 6 minutes 18 seconds; at 300 wpm the same text reads in 5 minutes.
What's a realistic average reading speed?
Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis put adult silent reading of non-fiction English at roughly 238 words per minute - the basis for our Average preset. Fiction tends to be a bit faster, dense technical text slower, and people read on screens a little slower than on paper.

How is the 'book pages' number calculated?
It divides the word count by 275 words per page, the standard estimate for a trade paperback novel. Use it as a rough conversion - margins, type size and book trim can shift the real page count by 10-20%.
How accurate is the estimate?
Within about 10-15% for typical English prose. Real reading time varies with familiarity, vocabulary, scanning vs deep reading, and whether you're on phone or paper. Pick the preset that matches your reader, then adjust if you know they're faster or slower.
Does it work for languages without spaces, like Chinese or Japanese?
Word counts use whitespace, so a CJK paragraph counts as one word and the time figure will be wrong. For those languages, divide your character count by a per-language characters-per-minute rate instead - the numbers on this page assume an English-style word boundary.
