How does it convert words to minutes?
It counts the whitespace-separated words in your text, then divides by the words-per-minute rate you picked. So 1,500 words at 150 wpm is 10 minutes; at 110 wpm it's about 13 minutes 38 seconds.
What's the average speaking rate?
Casual conversation averages 120-150 wpm. Public-speaking coaches recommend roughly 140-160 wpm for keynotes and presentations - fast enough to sound natural, slow enough for the room to follow. Audiobook narration is closer to 150-160.
Speaking time versus reading time - what's the difference?
Reading aloud is slower than reading silently. Adults read silently at around 238 words per minute on average, but read aloud at roughly 150. This tool shows both so you can plan a podcast script and a blog post from the same text.
How accurate is the estimate?
Within about 10% for English prose at the chosen pace. Real speaking time depends on pauses, slides, Q&A and how fast you naturally talk - rehearse with a timer to calibrate, then adjust the pace on this tool to match.
Does it work for languages without spaces, like Chinese or Japanese?
Word counts use whitespace, so a CJK paragraph counts as one word. For those languages, divide your character count by a per-language characters-per-minute rate instead - the figures on this page assume an English-style word boundary.
