01 / Overview

What is a startup runway calculator?

A startup runway calculator estimates how many months a business can operate before its available cash reaches zero. It divides current cash by monthly net burn, where net burn is expenses minus revenue. This calculator also estimates the zero-cash date and checks how the result compares with your chosen runway target.

How to use

  1. 01
    Enter current cash

Use the cash that is available to fund operations as of the selected balance date.

  2. 02
    Add monthly activity

Enter total monthly expenses and monthly revenue. Leave revenue blank for a pre-revenue business.

  3. 03
    Choose a target

Keep the 18-month reference or enter a runway target that matches the next funding or operating milestone.

  4. 04
    Read and copy the snapshot

Review net burn, runway, the estimated zero-cash date and the maximum expense level for the target.

Who it's for

  • Startup founders checking how much time remains before the next funding or profitability milestone.
  • Finance leads turning a current cash balance and monthly operating results into a board-ready runway snapshot.
  • Bootstrapped teams testing how a hiring or cost decision changes their monthly expense ceiling.
  • Advisors and investors checking the assumptions behind a reported cash runway figure.

The calculation runs locally in your browser. Use a consistent monthly period for revenue and expenses, and include recurring costs such as payroll, software, rent and marketing. The result is a steady-state snapshot, not a full cash flow forecast.

FAQ

Is my financial data uploaded?

No. The amounts are calculated in your browser and are not sent to a calculation server. You can clear the fields at any time. As with any website, avoid entering account numbers or other identifiers when a few aggregate amounts are enough for the calculation.

Is this startup runway calculator free?

Yes. You can calculate cash runway, net burn, an estimated zero-cash date and a target-runway gap without signing up or paying. There is no fixed calculation limit, and the page updates immediately when you change an input.

What is the calculation limit?

Each money input accepts a non-negative amount below 1 trillion, and the target runway can be set from more than 0 to 120 months. These limits cover normal planning scenarios while keeping the arithmetic safe in the browser.

How do you calculate startup runway?

Subtract monthly revenue from monthly expenses to get net burn, then divide current cash by that net burn. For example, 500,000 in cash with 50,000 of expenses and 15,000 of revenue has a 35,000 monthly net burn and about 14.3 months of runway.

What happens if revenue is higher than expenses?

The simple model reports no finite cash runway because the business is not consuming cash at the entered run rate. That does not guarantee permanent solvency. Revenue can fall, costs can rise, and timing differences between invoices and collections can still create cash pressure.

How accurate is the estimated zero-cash date?

It converts runway months to calendar time using the average length of a month and assumes the same net burn continues. Treat the date as a planning marker. A month-by-month cash forecast is better when revenue, hiring, annual bills or fundraising proceeds will change.

How much runway should a startup have?

There is no universal target. Many teams plan around the time needed to reach a milestone or complete a fundraise, plus a buffer for delays. Enter your own target instead of treating 18 months as a guarantee or a rule for every company.
