This calculator models the deal behind the monthly payment. A trade-in with a remaining payoff contributes only its net equity: trade-in value minus what you still owe. You can also choose whether your local rules tax the full vehicle price or reduce the taxable price by the trade-in value. Everything runs locally in your browser, with no account and no figures uploaded.

How do you calculate an auto loan payment?
An auto loan calculator starts with the vehicle price, adds estimated tax and financed fees, then subtracts your down payment and net trade-in equity. It applies the APR and loan term to that amount financed to estimate your monthly car payment, total interest, total payments and month-by-month balance.
How to use
- 01Build the vehicle deal
Enter the vehicle price, cash down payment, trade-in value, trade-in payoff, estimated sales tax rate and any fees you plan to finance.
- 02Set the loan terms
Enter the annual percentage rate and choose or type the number of monthly payments. Use the trade-in tax credit only if it matches the rules where the vehicle is registered.
- 03Compare payment and total cost
Read the live monthly payment, amount financed and total interest. Try a shorter term or larger down payment, then inspect the amortization schedule.
Who it's for
- Car shoppers checking a dealer quote against the full price, tax, fees and financing terms.
- Trade-in owners seeing how positive equity or an outstanding payoff changes the amount financed.
- Borrowers comparing terms weighing a lower monthly payment against the extra interest from 72 or 84 months.
- Pre-approved buyers testing a bank or credit union APR before negotiating the out-the-door price.
FAQ
Is this auto loan calculator free?
Yes. You can change every price and loan input without signing up or paying. The calculation runs in your browser and updates immediately, so there is no usage limit imposed by the tool.
Are my vehicle and loan details uploaded?
No. The figures you enter are processed locally in your browser. The calculator does not submit your vehicle price, down payment, trade-in, tax rate, APR or loan term to a server.
Does the calculator include sales tax and dealer fees?
Yes. Enter your estimated sales tax rate and the title, registration, documentation or add-on fees you expect to finance. Tax treatment and which fees apply vary by jurisdiction and deal, so compare the estimate with the written out-the-door price.
How does a trade-in with a loan affect the car payment?
The calculator subtracts the trade-in value and adds the payoff on the old loan. If the vehicle is worth more than its payoff, the positive equity reduces the new loan. If the payoff is higher, the negative equity increases the amount financed.
Should sales tax be calculated before or after a trade-in?
It depends on where the vehicle is registered. Some jurisdictions reduce the taxable price by an eligible trade-in value, while others tax the full purchase price. The calculator uses the full price by default and provides an explicit trade-in tax credit option.
Why can a longer auto loan cost more even with a lower payment?
A longer term spreads the balance across more monthly payments, which usually lowers each payment. Interest also accrues for more months, so total interest can rise. Compare the monthly payment and total interest together instead of choosing on payment alone.
Is the estimated payment the same as a lender quote?
Not necessarily. This is a planning estimate for a fixed-rate installment loan. A lender may use different financed charges, payment dates, rounding, add-ons or tax treatment. Confirm the APR, amount financed, finance charge and total of payments in the written disclosure.
