How much do I need to save for retirement?

A retirement calculator projects how current savings and monthly contributions may grow by your retirement age, then compares that balance with an income-based target. This calculator includes expected investment return, inflation and an adjustable withdrawal rate, so you can test how saving more, retiring later or changing assumptions affects your plan.

How to use

  1. 1Enter your ages and current savings. Add your current age, intended retirement age and the amount already set aside for retirement.
  2. 2Set contributions and desired income. Enter the fixed amount you plan to add each month and the monthly retirement income you want in today's money.
  3. 3Review the planning assumptions. Adjust expected annual return, inflation and withdrawal rate. The projection updates instantly so you can compare cautious and optimistic cases.
  4. 4Read the gap and savings pace. Compare projected savings with the inflation-adjusted target, then use the required and additional monthly figures to refine your plan.

Who it's for

The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your ages, savings and income goal are not uploaded or stored. The result is a planning estimate rather than a promise: investment returns vary, inflation changes, and taxes, fees, pensions and government benefits are not included.

FAQ

Is this retirement calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free with no account, sign-up or usage limit. You can change every input as often as needed to compare retirement ages, contribution amounts and assumptions. It uses plain JavaScript in your browser and does not require a financial service connection.

Are my retirement figures uploaded or stored?

No. Every projection runs locally in your browser. The ages, balances, contribution and income goal you enter are not sent to a server or saved by this tool. Once the page has loaded, the calculator can continue working without a network connection.

How does the retirement calculator work?

It compounds current savings and fixed end-of-month contributions to your retirement age using the annual return entered. It inflates your desired monthly income to retirement, divides the annual amount by the withdrawal rate, and compares that target with the projected balance to show a surplus or shortfall.

What rate of return should I use for retirement planning?

Use a long-term estimate that fits your investment mix, fees and risk level rather than a recent best year. Because returns are uncertain and uneven, compare several scenarios. A lower return gives a more cautious projection and makes the effect of relying on optimistic growth easier to see.

Does the calculator account for inflation?

Yes. Your desired monthly retirement income is entered in today's money. The calculator raises the resulting savings target by the inflation rate for every year until retirement. It also translates the projected balance back into today's purchasing power for an easier comparison.

What does the withdrawal rate mean?

The withdrawal rate is the percentage of retirement savings assumed available as income during the first retirement year. The default 4% is only a planning assumption, not a guarantee. Taxes, investment mix, retirement length, market timing and spending changes can all affect a sustainable rate.

Does this include Social Security, pensions, taxes or fees?

No. The calculator focuses on savings you control and the income those savings may support. It does not model country-specific benefits, pensions, employer matches, taxes or investment fees. Reduce the desired income by reliable outside income or use more conservative return assumptions where appropriate.

Why can the required monthly contribution differ from my current contribution?

The required amount is the fixed monthly deposit that would reach the inflation-adjusted target under the selected return. If it exceeds your current contribution, the difference appears as additional monthly savings. Changing retirement age, income goal, inflation, return or withdrawal rate will change that amount.
