How can I add page numbers to a PDF?

Add your PDF, pick one of six header or footer positions, and choose which pages to number. You can set the first printed number, style, font size, and edge margin before downloading a new PDF. Processing stays in your browser, so the document is not uploaded to a file server.

How to use

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Your PDF is read, numbered, and saved in your browser. CanDoYa does not receive the document. The page must load the PDF library before processing, but the file itself is not posted to a processing service. Clear the tool or close the tab to release its local preview and download data.

Is it free to add page numbers to a PDF?

Yes. The tool adds page numbers and creates a downloadable PDF without an account, payment, watermark, or task quota. It processes one document at a time on your device. The fixed safety limits are 150 MB and 2,000 pages, and available browser memory can impose a lower practical limit.

What are the PDF size and page limits?

The input limit is 150 MB and 2,000 pages. Browser editing can temporarily use several times the source file size because it holds both the original and output in memory. A large PDF may work on a laptop but fail on a memory-constrained phone. Splitting a very large document first can help.

Can I skip the cover page and start numbering at 1?

Yes. If the cover is source page 1, enter 2 as From page and 1 as Start at number. The first visible number will be 1 on source page 2. Set To page to the final page that needs a number; pages outside that continuous range remain unchanged.

Can I put numbers at the top or bottom of each page?

Yes. Choose top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center, or bottom right. Margin controls the distance from the page edge, measured in millimetres. The tool accounts for portrait, landscape, and stored 90 degree page rotations when calculating each placement.

Will adding numbers reduce PDF quality?

The tool writes vector text onto each selected page instead of rasterizing the page, so existing text, images, and vectors are not deliberately recompressed. The output may have a different file size because the PDF is saved again. Unusual PDF features should be checked in the downloaded copy before distribution.

Will existing digital signatures stay valid?

Do not assume so. Adding visible page numbers changes the PDF bytes, which normally invalidates cryptographic signatures that covered the original file. Work from an unsigned copy or keep the signed original untouched. This tool does not promise signature preservation, certification retention, or long-term archival conformance.

Why is my encrypted or damaged PDF rejected?

The browser library cannot safely edit password-protected PDFs without an unlock step, and malformed files may not have a readable page tree. If you are authorized, open an encrypted file with its password and save an unlocked copy first. For a damaged file, repair or re-export it before adding page numbers.
