How do you calculate the time between two times?

Convert both clock times to minutes since midnight, subtract the start from the end, and read the gap back as hours and minutes. If the end time is earlier on the clock than the start, it falls on the next day, so add 24 hours. This tool does that instantly - just enter the two times.

How to use

  1. 1Enter the start time. Type or pick the earlier time of day in the start field (for example 09:00).
  2. 2Enter the end time. Type or pick the end time. If it is earlier on the clock than the start, it is counted as the next day and marked as spanning midnight.
  3. 3Read the duration. The gap appears as hours and minutes, with total decimal hours, total minutes, and total seconds below. Use Copy results to grab them all.

Who it's for

Everything runs locally. Your two times are parsed in the browser, the duration is worked out on the page, and nothing is uploaded or stored. Change either time and the result updates at once; it works offline once the page has loaded.

FAQ

Is the time between two times calculator free?

Yes - it is 100% free with no sign-up and no limits. The whole calculation runs in your browser and your times are never uploaded to a server.

How does it handle times that cross midnight?

If the end time is earlier on the clock than the start time, the tool assumes the end is on the next day and adds 24 hours. So 23:30 to 01:00 is counted as 1 hour 30 minutes and flagged as spanning midnight.

Can I enter times in 12-hour format with AM and PM?

Yes. You can type times like 9:30 AM or 5:00 PM as well as 24-hour times like 09:30 or 17:00. Note that 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon.

How do I convert the result to decimal hours?

The tool shows decimal hours for you - for example 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours. It divides the total minutes by 60, which is the figure most timesheets and payroll systems expect.

What is the difference between this and a date difference calculator?

This tool works with clock times only, so the answer is always under 24 hours. A date difference calculator includes the calendar date, so it can measure gaps that run across several days, months, or years.

Does it include seconds?

Yes, if you enter them. You can add seconds to either time (such as 09:00:30) and the duration, total minutes, and total seconds all account for them. Without seconds, the tool works to the minute.
